National Environmental Groups Endorse Martin Heinrich For U.S. Senate

Albuquerque, N.M. – On Sunday, April 22, in honor of Earth Day, the Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund, the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, and the Sierra Club announced their endorsement of Martin Heinrich for re-election to the U.S. Senate.

“Martin Heinrich is an environmental leader in the Senate,” said Kevin Curtis, executive director of the NRDC Action Fund. “He understands the enormous economic and environmental benefits of investing in renewable energy to power New Mexico’s future, create good-paying jobs and reduce pollution. In the face of unprecedented attacks by the Trump administration, he has fought to preserve public lands in New Mexico and around the country. The NRDC Action Fund is proud to endorse Senator Heinrich because his leadership helps build a healthy, prosperous future for New Mexicans and all Americans.”

“Senator Heinrich is a champion on so many environmental issues,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “He has fought tirelessly to protect our public lands and grow New Mexico’s outdoor recreation economy. He is also a leader on clean energy and safeguarding our air and water. We need Senator Heinrich’s leadership now more than ever, and we are delighted to endorse him once again as he runs for reelection.”

“Senator Heinrich is one of our own. He served in our local leadership, showing the true grassroots nature of his ongoing actions to protect New Mexico’s air, water, lands and wildlife,” said David Coss, former mayor of Santa Fe and chair of the Sierra Club’s Rio Grande Chapter.  “His outdoor and science experience give him a unique and authoritative voice in Congress.  The Senator’s work to defend our National Monuments, protect our communities from oil and gas waste and pollution, and stand up for New Mexico on an array of other conservation issues in Washington DC make him not just our endorsed candidate for reelection to the Senate but a true model for New Mexico and the country.”

“I am proud to have the support of organizations leading the effort to combat climate change, protect our public lands and natural resources, and grow renewable energy in New Mexico,” said Martin Heinrich. “I have been honored to work with the NRDC Action Fund, LCV, and Sierra Club throughout my tenure in public office and look forward to continuing to fight alongside them in the years to come.”

Martin has fought for our public lands and natural resources his entire adult life. In the Senate, Martin has championed the creation of Rio Grande del Norte and Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks national monuments, led the fight against the Trump Administration’s attacks on our public lands, negotiated a deal to extend critical clean energy federal tax credits driving a clean energy boom, and fought to keep the methane rule in place to combat climate change.
