ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Senator Martin Heinrich today issued a scathing rebuke of Nella Domenici’s latest campaign ad, calling it an “insult to every New Mexican who values their rights and freedoms.” 

“For the last fifty years, one of the central tenets of the Republican Party has been to overturn Roe vs. Wade and ban abortion. Not once during those fifty years did Nella Domenici speak out publicly in support of abortion access. Not once did she break ranks with her party to defend the rights of women and families. Not once has she ever lifted a single finger to protect New Mexicans’ right to access an abortion.

But now she’s running for the U.S. Senate, handpicked and bankrolled by a Republican Party that has relentlessly attacked reproductive rights and freedoms, including the right to access an abortion. They’re pouring money into her campaign for one reason and one reason only: to give Republicans the majority they need to pass a national abortion ban.

New Mexicans aren’t fools. Nella Domenici and her campaign know that her opposition to abortion is a losing issue, so they’re rolling out a poll-tested position designed to trick voters into believing she’s something that she’s not. This isn’t just deceptive, it’s a blatant insult to every New Mexican who values their rights and freedoms.

Let’s not forget: Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominees stood before the Senate and lied. They said they respected the precedent of Roe vs. Wade and then the minute they had the chance they tore it down and stripped millions of their rights. Now, the same forces are backing Nella Domenici, hoping to finish the job.

The ad, notably not being promoted by Domenici’s campaign, presents a carefully crafted and poll-tested message designed to obscure her party’s extreme stance on abortion. The ad is paid for by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), led by Sen. Steve Daines, who supports a national ban on abortion and has enthusiastically endorsed Domenici.

Domenici backed the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade and has attacked Sen. Martin Heinrich for opposing a national abortion ban. Domenici is supported by leading Republicans, including Sen. John Thune, Sen. John Cornyn, and Sen. Steve Daines, all of whom would ban abortion nationwide. Domenici has also supported extreme anti-choice Republicans, including Rep. Yvette Herrell, who was an original co-sponsor of the Life at Conception Act and supports banning all abortions. She also donated to Mark Ronchetti after it was revealed he privately said he wanted to “end all abortions.”
